It seemed appropriate to start “Throwback Gallery” with a highlight on a program with a proud past, and to fully disclose my bias toward the Pirates of East Carolina University and the purple and gold! Having a play anyone-anywhere, kill the giant mentality helped create a hopeful football following that saw the Pirates as underdogs more times than not, but generated enough competitive games and wins over more talented, and better funded programs to further the “We Believe!” movement that gave the school and program national attention, and many late night sports highlight mentions. Currently, poor performance on the field, and multiple bad decisions in the athletic administrative office over the years have caused the football program, season ticket sales, fundraising, and overall fan support to decline. This unnamed fan looking off into what appears to be a faded field symbolizes the ECU program’s unclear future.
